What is Woven Fabric?

There are 3 types of fabrics in terms of structure woven. Woven fabric is made in a loom, Woven fabric is any textile formed by weaving. Woven fabric is made by interlacing 2 sets of warp & weft yarns according to design. In this case, 2 or more yarns and natural or synthetic or both types of yarns can be used in warp & weft.

1.What is Canvas?

This fabric is usually made of cotton yarn. It is very strong and durable. Blending synthetic fibers with cotton to make water-resistant fabrics suitable for outdoor use.

Canvas is a basic textile design; It is made by tightly weaving yarns together in a plain weave. Most canvas fabrics are made of 2 ply yarn which adds weight, texture.

Uses of Canvas

Canvas fabric is used for various purposes including home decor, sailor to fashionable clothes. The widely used fields are painting, tents, bags, shoes, covering, clothing, backdrops, furniture etc.

 

2. What is Chiffon?

Chiffon fabric is sheer, plain weave, and lightweight fabric. The fabric is made from tightly twisted yarn. The twisted crepe yarn puckers the fabric slightly in both directions after weaving. These puckers are created using s-twist and z-twist's crepe yarn. It gives a slightly rough feel and some stretch.

Chiffon fabric is generally made from silk, synthetic, polyester, rayon and combed cotton. But it looks like nylon or silk. Chiffon fabric can be easily dyed and developed desired shade.

 

Uses of Chiffon

Chiffon fabric is a beautiful drape, shimmery appearance, softest and delicate. So, It is used evening gowns, wedding dresses, scarves, blouses, sarees, dupattas, sashes, skirts and tops, home dƩcor, etc.

3.What is Chenille?

Chenille fabric heavyweight, rough feels woven fabric. Chenille is the name for both types of yarn and fabric. It is made from different fibers like cotton, silk, wool and rayon.

 

Uses of Chenille

It is used as upholstery, curtains, cushions and mop cloths.

 

4. What is Crepe?

Crepe fabric is a plain-woven fabric made of high twisted yarn in one direction or warp and weft both, which is giving a pebble or wrinkle surface and bumpy appearance. Crepe is usually light to medium weight fabric. It is generally made from cotton, silk, wool or synthetic fibers. That is why crepe is also called crepe silk or crepe chiffon.

 

Uses of Crepe

Crepe is a versatile uses fabric. It is used for various purposes like suit and dressmaking, blouses, sarees, curtains, linings, scarves, children's dresses, etc.

 

5.What is Cambric?

Cambric is a lightweight very fine bleached linen fabric. It is plain weave fabric. The fabric is made of imitation of the French fabric produced around Cambria( France). After weaving the fabrics are bleached, peach-dyed, calendared and produced with a stiff finish.  Initially, it was made from linen, later it was also made from cotton fiber.

 

Uses of Cambric

It is used as a handkerchief, children's dress, nightgowns, underwear and slips for ease of maintenance. Also, it is used as women's clothes, shirts, ruffs, needlework and lace.

 

6.What is Denim?

Denim fabric is generally used for making jeans. It is usually yarn-dyed and warp-faced twill fabric. Warp is usually dyed and the weft is grey or white. In denim fabric, the colored yarns of the warp are usually visible on the face side of the fabric and the gray yarns of weft are visible on the back. Denim fabric is generally colored with indigo-dyed to create blue jeans. It can also be maroon, green, brown and other colors. Due to its unique texture and comfort and new innovative design, it is used widely for fashionable dresses.

 

Uses of Denim

It is widely used verities fashionable dress like shirts, jackets, pants, men’s trousers, babywear, ladies wear. Also, denim is used for ladies handbags, school bags, travel bags, denim win bags, denim pencil case, denim apron, denim pillows, denim quilt, footwear, accessories, upholstery, etc.

 

7.What is Gabardine?

A compactly warp-faced twill, durable, strong, and firm cloth with a diagonal cord. Gabardine fabric can be made of several varieties fiber like worsted, cotton, silk and mixed fiber tightly woven fabrics. Somewhat like whipcord but with a lighter texture. Weft or filling yarns are visible on the back, poor quality yarn can be used without loss of durability. Because only the surface of the warp is visible for wear.

 

Uses of Gabardine

Gabardine fabric is used varieties purposes like suits, casual wear, pants overcoat, military uniforms, sportswear, hats, raincoats, skiwear, fabric shoes, all-weather coats etc.

 

8.What is Flannel?

Flannel is plain or twill woven fabric. Originally flannel is made of wool but at present, it is made of cotton or synthetic fibers. It is popular for its softness and comfort. The softness on the fabric comes from a technique employed by the mills called “brushing”. It can be one or both sides of the fabric surface. In many cases, napping is done by distressing the spun fiber and it takes on the appearance of unspun fiber. But napping does decrease the durability of fabric a little.

 

Uses of Flannel

Flannel fabric is often used in cold-weather dresses like shirts, cardigans, sweaters. In addition sometimes used in bags, belts, purses, running shorts, sportswear, cycling wear, etc.

 

9.What is Georgette?

Georgette is a sheer, lightweight, plain weave fabric. It is a type of crepe fabric; it has a rough texture that is made of tightly twisted ply yarn both in warp and weft. Normally, it was woven from pure silk but now, it is also made from synthetic fibers like rayon, viscose polyester. Silk georgette is very similar to silk chiffon but georgette is not as perfect as chiffon because of the tighter weave. The average weight varies from 30-80 gsm.

 

Uses of Georgette

It is mainly used for women’s wear like evening wear, bridal wear, sarees, blouses, salwar kameez, gowns, flared skirts, scarves, and also shirts, lining, veils, bows, waist belts, etc.

 

10.What is organdy?

Organdy is the crispest, semi-transparent, relatively delicate and stiff cotton fabric made with fine-spun combed yarn. It is a plain-weave cotton fabric. Organdy fabrics are characterized by stiffness and crispness. The fabric is crisped and transparent with a variety of special finishing processes, known as parchmentizing. It is similar to lawn and batiste cloth.

 

Uses of organdy

It is typically used for women’s wear, ceremonial cloth for girls, evening wear, wedding dress, curtains, decorative upholstery, lining, men’s jacket, etc.

 

11.What is Taffeta?

Taffeta is a crisp, soft, smooth, transparent fabric. It has a typically lustrous, shiny and unique rippled appearance. It is commonly made with a plain weave, fine warp yarns. A good quality taffeta fabric represents an optimum artwork. Originally it is made with silk fiber but now it is made of rayon, nylon or other synthetic fibers. It varies weight from light to medium depending on the level of sheerness, type of fibers and tightness of the weave.

Uses of Taffeta

Taffeta fabric is mostly used as a lining, evening wear and home dƩcor. In addition, it is used party costumes, curtains, corsets, parachutes, umbrellas, handbags, etc.

 

12.What is Velvet? 

Velvet is one kind of softest, smoothest, luxurious fabric. It is originally made from silk but now it is produced rayon, cotton, linen, wool, mohair and synthetics fiber. Due to the short-cut file fibers in the same density, the fabric has a better drape, shiny appearance and unique softness. It is used in weaving with special high twisted yarn single or ply.

 

Uses of Velvet

Velvet is a luxurious and soft fabric so, it is used as intimate clothing, women’s apparel, soft furnishings and also other textile applications, upholstery, curtains, hat and gloves, etc.
